Ballet Folklórico de Austin presents Guelaguetza Oaxaqueña, one of the liveliest and most joyful festivals celebrated in Oaxaca in the month of July. Guelaguetza commemorates the mutual interdependence of the people within the community. It celebrates the importance of indigenous cultures of sharing, reciprocity, and extended community. “Guelaguetza,” from the Zapotec language, means “reciprocal exchanges of gifts and services”. Ballet Folklórico de Austin is a dance group founded in 2014 under the direction of maestro Edgar Yepez, involving youth and adult people from our community focused on presenting a memorable program of beautiful dances and colorful authentic regional dress that will live in the memory of Austin as a prime example of Mexican culture.
