Call for Speakers: Ruffle Some Feathers

GAACC NextGen is collaborating with Accent Unmuted, FYP, and KUT for a special live storytelling event on Thursday, October 22 — and we’re looking for speakers from our community.

The theme, Ruffle Some Feathers, is all about moments when you spoke up, challenged expectations, disrupted the status quo, or pushed for change. That story might come from your workplace, family, culture, industry, community, or a completely unexpected place.

If you have a story to tell — or know someone whose voice should be heard — we’d love to hear from you.

The deadline to nominate yourself or someone else is Monday, September 1.

What is Accent Unmuted?

Accent Unmuted is a nonprofit live storytelling series dedicated to changing the way accented immigrants are heard and perceived through stories that build familiarity, empathy, and community.

Events take place at KUT’s Studio 1A and feature vibrant, funny, heartfelt, and memorable stories told by people whose voices are often left off the mic. Stories are also featured through KUT’s Austin Signal radio program.

For this event, selected speakers will develop and share a 5–7 minute personal story. This is not a TED Talk, and no professional speaking experience is required.

Selected storytellers receive:

✳️ Free coaching on story development and delivery
✳️ Professional headshots and video
✳️ A platform to share their story with the Austin community
✳️ The opportunity to be featured on the radio
✳️ A supportive live audience cheering them on
